We had great weather on this holiday, plenty of sunshine, if not a little fresh. There was some wind so we had to work out the places surfers didn’t want to go so went there as this meant we would be protected from the wind. We discovered that it could feel like summer one side of a wall/hedge and winter on the windy side. As you can see…….

This was the start of the long hot summer and everyone had a great time in Cornwall with Steve. It was his first time painting in Cornwall and he was amazed by the breathtaking scenery and the waves….

As you can see here it was a cracking day when we went to Trevone.

When we were at Trevone a psychedelic van  pulled up alongside us and a bloke got out and I thought I recognise that geezer..it was Tony from Patchings. Later that day Jeremy was at the top of the cliff and Tony was at the bottom of the cliff and Jeremy tipped his dirty paint water over the cliff…Tony knew what he was up to and shouted up but it wasn’t anywhere near.

Below: As you can see, this painting lark is hard work. This guest needed a rest after he had finished his picture.

Right: At Alpha we always try our hardest to ensure our guests have a great painting experience so when one of our guests wanted to change the composition we moved heaven and earth, well just the earth to improve the picture to their liking!

May - Paul Weaver - Paint “Lakes, Mountains & Rivers” in the Lakes District

Above: Paul can be seen above giving some 1-to-1 tuition

Above: This is the view from my room…what a cracking view!

Above: Boats, Planes & Scaffolding! The hazards of painting on location…

but we found a decent composition (Above)

Whilst at Rydall Hall, I bumped into a guest that came on one of our holidays in Portugal last year….what a small world!

June - Kevin Scully - Paint The Amazing Light & Colour of The Western Algarve

Kevin tutored for us in Portugal in June and the weather could have been better, which was a surprise…it was better in Scotland that week but we still managed to get out and get some paintings done.

Left: You can see Kevin giving one of our regulars some tuition at Alvor and (Right) you can see a lovely little scene in one of the back streets at Alvor too, behind the restaurant we use.

Below: Our first trip to Sitio-Das-Fontes, a nearby nature reserve went down very well as guests loved the painting potential here.

Left: One of our guests attracted quite a crowd at Praia Da Luz.

Right: When we booked this holiday we were told that there would be a wedding one day and worked with the hotel to ensure we weren’t in the way of the wedding party nor were our guests affected. In some spare time we thought we would have a look at what a traditional Portuguese Wedding party would look like, only to find out it was a couple from Essex!

May - Steve Hall - Paint North Cornwall Harbours & Rugged Coast

This was the start of the long hot summer and everyone had a great time in Cornwall with Steve. It was his first time painting in Cornwall and he was amazed by the breathtaking scenery and the waves….I must confess, I disappeared a few time to take a few pictures of waves (ok, a few hundred or even a few thousand).

It was a special wedding anniversary for Steve & Pat while he was with us and we all did something special for them.

Left: A couple from the US set up on the beach to get closer to the action.

We are attracting people from across the globe, obviously word is getting out about what we do.

June - Barry Herniman - Paint North Cornwall Harbours & Rugged Coast

On this holiday, nearly every day started out misty but we had faith in the forecast and by the time we arrived at the painting locations or at least by coffee time, the sun came out and it was hot.

It was such a glorious day here at Trevone (Left & Right) with such a choice of painting subjects.

Although we had to share the car park with a German Film Crew (Below).

The waves were crashing again and we were all amazed at the sheer power and beauty of it all. Truly a spiritual experience. Sometimes you can capture creation through art and photography but sometimes you have to just stand in awe of it…that was one of those moments.

July - Michal Jasiewicz - Paint Historic Wells, Somerset

We were very pleased to welcome Michal Jasiewicz for his first painting holiday in the UK, which took place in Wells, Somerset.

You can see him here demonstrating his loose style of watercolour in the photos on the Left and he can be seen here on the Right giving one-to-one tuition, where the guests brought him to his knees.

Below he looks like he is seeking divine inspiration.

Left: As you can see our guests will try anything to help improve their paintings. This guest tried some “flow improver” for her painting….aka wine!

Right: Michal at the end of the holiday with one of his demonstrations of Bishop’s Palace.

July - Jeremy Ford - Paint the Beautiful Wye Valley

We had cracking weather for these 2 holidays in the Wye Valley, with Jeremy Ford and then below with Arnold Lowrey. Everyone tried to find the shade as you can see on the top right at St. Briavels.

See Details of holidays in The Wye Valley next year>>>>

The guest above right had the right idea on how to keep out of the sun and still have all the accessories needed on a painting holiday whereas the guest on the far left didn’t seem to care about the heat and was still quite happy

Well one guest went one step further with her umbrella which can keep the rain off or in this case keep the sun off but at the same time being a very good painting holiday accessory acting as a colour wheel (Above)

September - Grahame Booth - Paint beautiful French Villages & Stunning Provence

We were thankful to Grahame for stepping in for Barry who was unwell. Fortunately, Grahame was in Nice the week before and so all he had to do was jump on Eurostar and he was there. Just as well we know lot’s of friendly, helpful tutors…...thanks Grahame!

Whilst we all missed Barry and are pleased all is well now, Grahame did a great job and everyone had a good time and enjoyed all his demos.

Left: Here he is demonstrating at Gordes and Below Left he can be seen painting the magical view of Roussillon. In fact he attracted quite a crowd of passers by. In fact his demos were so interesting the even a dog decided to sit and watch one! (Right).

Below: The finished painting at Lourmarin, a lovely French Village.

See Details of holidays in Provence>>>>

Left: Jeremy is giving some tips and advice at Tintern Old Station. and as you know Jeremy loves teaching colour mixing and demonstrating how the colour wheel works.

Grahame did a quick demo each morning followed by plenty of 1-2-1 tuition where he helped people interpret a scene and get the colours and lights and darks just right.

Far left: Some of our guests get into all sorts of places to get good compositions whereas others just stand there waiting for paint to dry….I think he just wanted to soak up some rays! (Left).

September - Paul Weaver - Paint beautiful French Villages & Stunning Provence

See Details of holidays in Provence>>>>

Paul Weaver loves the play of light and shade on a subject here and I think all this photos captures that very well but the one of the barn in the grounds of the hotel is especially striking. Paul is very good at tucking himself away in the shade so it is very hard to get a good picture of him. Paul is a great tutor and demonstrates each day and works very hard going around the group and help people achieve this balance between light and shade in their paintings.

Above: One of our guests who was a non-painter brought his bike all the way from the US….no, he didn’t cycle all the way from there, he brought it on the plane and you can see him showing some interest in the demo or was he just having a welcomed rest.

We had one guest who brought an art bag that she got on another holiday with one of our competitors and had their name plastered all over it. So one day when the group went to lunch we took one of the Alpha photos from our bags that we provide and taped it over the top as a joke and waited to see how long it was before she noticed…it was quite a while but we all had a good laugh Then that afternoon, the handle broke on it and she blamed me! I said “Moi!”

Above: If you look very hard into the shadows….what do you see? Well it was hot but let’s just say I didn’t want to drink from the fountain afterwards as I wasn’t so sure it was pure spring water after that!
